About Mary Hokom

As a therapist in the Silver City community for many years, I have come to understand the extraordinary strengths and the many challenges our families face in today’s world.  I specialize in working with children and their families, bringing playful and traditional approaches to healing. I begin by understanding the uniqueness of each client, young or old, and work see into their world providing interventions that support their lives, their relationships and their mental health.

I am a Licensed Professional Clinical Counselor and registered as a play therapist with the National Association for Play Therapy.  I can work with both children and adults in this modality using the joy, excitement and creativity of play in a variety of ways to enhance the processes of emotional healing.

I am endorsed at the highest level with the New Mexico Association of Infant Mental Health. I work with parents and children ages 0-3 who have experienced disruptions in their lives that sometimes cause difficulty in building healthy relationships and can affect child’s development in many different ways.

I have been trained extensively in a parenting class called “Circle of Security” which recognizes the complexities of raising children in these times and provides a balanced approach to child rearing. I incorporate “play bases skills” when working with parents so they have a model/ map of parenting this way, and also can practice specific techniques to support changes they choose to make as parents.

I find it an honor to work with my very young clients and know that changes made during our time will support a healthier future for them.  Many of my adult clients show such strength and courage as they work through very difficult issues that they inspire me.
